Congaree National Park — South CarolinaYou can kayak in Congaree National Park. Jonathan A. Mauer/ShutterstockSouth Carolina’s Congaree National Park is home to one of the country's largest expanses of old-growth forest. But the park is best explored from a kayak or canoe when it floods. The park is free to visit and open year-round, but because this is South Carolina, expect heat, humidity, and mosquitos in the summer. Unsurprisingly, fall, winter, and spring are the best time to visit.

Handy HobFor those that want to boil water and cook on trail, try the Jetboil Mighty Mo camp stove. You’ll need to bring a fuel canister (and maybe a pan) to use it, but the stove itself weighs less than a quarter pound. If you want to eat anything other than peanut-butter sandwiches, you’ll make room. $60, REI.comJetboil

MEETING OF THE MINDS While car campers and backpackers have slightly different needs when preparing for the woods, there are essentials that both groups will want. Photo Illustration: Serge BlochMIMI JI has spent the last decade summiting over 80 peaks in New York’s Adirondack and Catskill mountains, often camping for multiple nights to stay as close to the trail as possible. Hauling heavy gear over these peaks can get old quickly, so the 40-year-old corporate procurement director severely edited the list of supplies she crams into her backpack.

SVELTER STORAGE The Cycloc Solo ($100) can be mounted vertically or horizontally, freeing up useful floor space under your bike. Photo: CyclocAS AN avid cyclist and apartment dweller, I have nearly 20 years of experience balancing bikes on banisters and stacking them up against bookshelves. Two broad categories of bike racks eliminate the need for such awkward hacks: those that rest on the floor and those that must be mounted on the wall. For example, while a wall-mounted bike rack saves you floor space, an improperly installed one can rip right off the wall, taking plenty of plaster along for the ride. According to Robin Graven-Milne, owner-operator of repair shop Bike Plant in Brooklyn, N.Y., installation worries are the biggest hurdle people shopping for a mountable bike rack must overcome.
